The Cloud is a neighborhood

Felt a bit stupid today (again). Have been struggling with some Microsoft Surface Go devices. Love the device but, when they are shipped with Windows 10 1803 version you will use some time updating them. So my brilliant idea was to reinstall them clean with the latest updated ISO from a stick. Smart right?, jupp except that I download the business VLK version.

I will be speaking at this years Hackcon in Oslo.  It is in Norwegian, my session content are covered HERE . Just installed the Microsoft KB3194496 update for Windows 10 Anniversary update and have successfully rebooted. I had the problem a lot of people have had lately with the update installing and rolling back after installation.

Modern Workplace Summit have come to an end, it was a great conference, thanks to Ståle  and Johan for making it happen, well done.  

Sometimes you need to make sure that your network profile are defined as “Private”, for instance when you want to connect to the computer with Remote desktop, or other firewall related configurations. First time you connect to a network you will get a pop up that actually are asking you if you want the network to be used as a “Private” or “Public” network, it just ask in a bit “confusing” way. (Domain profile” are only available for domain joined computers and will be automatic selected if there is a domain controller on the network).

In middle of August Windows 10 have supposedly reached more than 50 million computers (info here ), and with users trying it out at home and loving it, the pressure to get it at work computers also are build up. Microsoft have done different measure to make sure that enterprises will have more control over their Windows 10 deployment. The Windows 10 upgrade should be automatically blocked on computers or devices in the following scenarios:

The Insider Preview build of Windows 10 are getting new products keys. If you are upgrading from a previous build you should not get any problem with the old activated keys. If you are doing a new clean install you will need to type in the right product keys. Clean install can be done when the ISO file is available later (when the build hits slow ring), or when you create your own ISO with this guide  from the ESD file

For now MDT doesn't support deploying Windows 10. That is related too the new version number Windows got with build 9926.  

Playing around with the new Windows 10 Technical preview build 9926 I went in to check for updates since I was missing my display drivers, figuring out that it's better too check if Windows update have them, then installing the Windows 8.1 version (this will in most cases work, and this is what I had to do on the previous public build). There was some updates, so I started to install them, and after it was finished I got a real positive news about the update feature in Windows 10

Although it is now easy to test things in a virtual machine it is still something that require, or work better, on a physical installation. Among other Hyper-V or devices with touch screen. So now when "Windows 10 Technical Preview" is here it is an appropriate time to go through how to use the VHD files as a disk to install the OS. Which makes it possible to start the OS directly without going through a hypervisor, even though we use a VHD file as disk. You need to have the Pro or Enterprise version of Windows Vista, 7, 8 or 8.1   I will assume that you have downloaded the required ISO file, links can be found in my blog post http://olavtvedt.blogspot.no/2014/10/microsoft-jumps-over-number-9-windows.html

With Windows 10 you get your "Start Button" back if you are using a device with a keyboard. On devices without keyboard (touch display) or with devices with removable keyboard with the keyboard deattached, it will be started with just about the same start screen as in Windows 8.1. It is now even better than the old Windows 7 button.

Windows 10 can now be downloaded from MSDN or from http://preview.windows.com/  if you dont have MSDN access.     Preview site don't have the enterprise version, but it should soon be ready for download from the Technet evaluation center HERE . MSDN contains Windows 10 Enterprise and the Windows Server preview too. Server will be available later and also as a Azure VM :-)  And the version number are adding up to 10 (6+4)   :-) More info in Technet can be found here HERE
